December 16 - 24

Kilimanjaro

Departing Washington DC on the morning of December 16th, you will arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport in the early afternoon of December 17th. A private transfer will be awaiting your arrival at the airport and take you to your hotel in Moshi.

Use the next two days to recover from your flight and to acclimatize, before starting your hike on December 19th. Your guide will be picking you up from your hotel.

One icy peak looms over the arid Tanzanian plains. Its undeniable power has inspired folklore and legends, novels and songs. Sitting at 19,340 feet (5,895 meters), it is the highest peak in Africa and the largest freestanding mountain in the world. Indeed, a trip to Kilimanjaro is not for the faint of heart.

The trek up Kili has been compared to a journey from the equator to the North pole. The trail begins in the rainforest, lush with trees and drooping vines, and meanders its way to the odd but unique shrubbery of heath and moorland.

The landscape then morphs into the wondrously bizarre moonscape of a highland desert, which in turn gives way to an arctic peak surrounded by cracking glaciers. This hike through the clouds offers breathtaking scenery unlike anywhere else on earth.

The 5 - day climb requires little technical skill but will push you to your limits. Of the six routes up, only one includes huts to sleep in -- for the rest, hikers must camp in tents. Accommodations may be rustic, but the experience is unmatched. For nature-lovers who wish to find out what they’re made of, Kilimanjaro will be an unforgettable adventure and the accomplishment of a lifetime.

Arusha

As you complete your hike in Arusha, you will be met by your safari guide for the following five days. You will be taken to your hotel in Arusha for a well deserved night of rest.

Arusha, a vibrant city in Tanzania of about half a million people, is the springboard for many unparalleled adventures. Within arms reach of many renowned national parks, it’s the perfect place to start any Tanzanian safari experience.

This bustling city has top-notch hotels and restaurants while offering the opportunity for in-depth cultural exploration. After wandering the colorful markets, hearing the chatter of Swahili in the streets, or simply decompressing by the pool, most visitors end up finding Arusha endearing.

As most tourists visit as a part of a larger safari or a trip to Mt. Kilimanjaro, Arusha provides a necessary, relaxing respite from the African road.

Serengeti National Park

In the morning of December 26th, you will begin your Serengeti Safari.

The long-revered and wild Serengeti is one of those places that words cannot do justice.

Sunrises and sunsets over the vast expanses of the park are unlike any other. There is no better place on earth to see wildlife in action. Famous for the perpetual, cyclical migration of over a million hoofed animals from Zebras to Wildebeest, searching for fresh grasslands, this wilderness landscape in Northern Tanzania is a must-visit.

In addition to millions of herd animals, predators like lions, leopards, hyenas, and cheetahs quietly lurk in the background waiting to strike. Elephants, giraffes, hippopotamuses, baboons, and over 500 species of birds are common sightings on these immense plains, making the Serengeti National Park a wildlife and birding hotspot.

Your safari includes multiple game drives through the Serengeti in a private Jeep with a certified, private guide.

Ngorongoro Crater

On December 27th, you will be transferred from the Serengeti to Ngorongoro Crater.

Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania was once a gargantuan volcano, perhaps taller than Mt. Kilimanjaro before its eruption. What’s left is the world’s largest intact volcanic crater, home to an abundance of wildlife and dramatic vista after dramatic vista.

Filled with expansive grassland, this animal haven is an ideal place to glimpse the Big Five: lion, rhinoceros, elephant, leopard, and cape buffalo.

This national park, teeming with animal life, features some of nature’s most majestic beasts in some of the world’s most miraculous landscapes. If you are lucky enough to visit between February and March, you may even witness the Serengeti’s Great Migration, one of the most jaw-dropping spectacles of the natural world.

You may also engage in meaningful cultural interaction with the Maasai tribe, many of whom pursue their traditional lifestyle within the crater.

Accommodations: Ngorongoro Farm House or Similar

In the morning of December 29th, you will be transferred back to Arusha and straight to the airport.

December 30 - January 4

Mahé

On the morning of December 30th, catch your direct connecting flight from Addis Ababa straight to Mahe, Seychelles. A hotel transfer will be awaiting your arrival on the island and take you to your resort.

Mahé is the Seychelles’ biggest and most bustling island. As you soon will realize though, bustling is a relative term, and a relaxed, island-time vibe dominates this emerald isle.

While the beaches here are stunning (it is the Seychelles, after all), Mahé’s main draw is actually its vibrant culture and stunning natural scenery. Visiting Victoria, the country’s capital, is like taking a step back in time. Quite confined in space, with colorful architecture and not a chain restaurant in site, Victoria is an impossibly charming little town. Spend a few hours wandering the streets and getting in touch with the island’s culture and history.

For the more active, head into Mahé’s lush, forested interior. Hiking trails abound here, and offer a great chance to spot local flora and fauna. What’s more steep treks are rewarded with breath-taking views of the islands below.

Being the largest island, Mahé is also home to the county’s largest selection of hotels and activities. Anything you want to do in the Seychelles, you can de here, on Mahé.

Accommodation: Bliss Seychelles Boutique Hotel

In the early afternoon of January 3rd, catch your two-stop return flight to the United States. You will arrive back in Washington DC on the afternoon of January 4th.
