Colombo

Colombo is Sri Lanka’s capital, a port city with rich colonial heritage, and the gateway to any Sri Lankan adventure. Colombo is a city where the country's distinct cultures and histories mix and mingle ‘serendipitously’ and in fact, Sri Lanka is exactly the origin of the word. Colombo, similarly to all major capital cities, displays the highs and lows that the country has to offer. The city, with all its mansions, lush gardens, fine dining options, shopping malls full of expensive designer brands stand irreverently next to urban shanty towns, congested roads, and street markets.

However, Colombo’s cosmopolitan momentum fuels ever-more stylish eateries, galleries, and museums. Surprises come plenty in its old quarters where you can find delicious traditional restaurants, discover a charming shop, or sip coffee in a tiny convivial cafe.

Kandy

Kandy is a beautiful city nestled among foggy hills and a peaceful lake. It's colorful houses, colonial architecture, and ancient temples give Kandy an undeniable charm. It is also the Capital of the Central Province and the second largest city in the country, but besides this administrative role, Kandy is also an important religious center commonly visited by Buddhists from the Theravada School.

Kandy's is a must-see for three important reasons: It is the home of the sacred tooth relic of the Buddha, The Botanical Gardens, and during July and August it hosts the renown Esala Perahara festival. However, it's vibrant cultural life, and many other attractions will ensure you'll fall in love with simply strolling around town and absorbing the local life.

Nuwara Eliya

The Sri Lankan tourist industry often calls Nuwara Eliya ‘Little England’. While almost all British visitors fail to recognize any resemblance, the toy-town atmosphere does have a rose-tinted English country town vibe to it, though it comes with a bewildering surrealist edge.

This beautiful upcountry town is situated 1868 meters (6128 feet) above sea level, and due to this high altitude, it has a Sub Tropical Highland climate. Horton Plains situated south of Nuwara Eliya is a unique Ecological zone of Wet Patana Grassland with a lush Cloud Forest.

Nuwara Eliya district is famous for Tea Plantation, and the cool and moist climate are factors for the Tea leaves to thrive on. Areas such as Hatton, Talawakele, Maskeliya are around Nuwara Eliya, and tea grown in this region has a high market and is in good demand worldwide.

Yala National Park

Situated in Sri Lanka’s south-east region, Yala was designated a wildlife sanctuary over a hundred years ago, but it was ironically used as a hunting ground for the British elite. The park houses 44 varieties of mammals and 215 bird species. Yala is famous for having the world’s most concentrated population of leopards which makes sightings very common, but you'll also get the chance to see Asian elephants, sloth bears, sambars, jackals, spotted deer, peacocks, and crocodiles.

Yala is comprised of a strict nature reserve where access is restricted to tourism and a national park where you'll be allowed in. The protected area is nearly 130,000 hectares and consists of light forests, scrubs, grasslands, tanks, and lagoons.

In addition to fantastic wildlife encounters here, you can also witness the ancient remains of a lost civilization. The Monastic ruins of Sithulpawwa, still an important pilgrim site, is said to have been home to 12,000 people seeking solace some 2000 years ago. The restored rock Temple and many other well-preserved ancient temples offer a reflection of its rich history.

Galle

The Dutch Fort at Galle is known as the best-preserved sea fort in South Asia. A living and breathing UNESCO world heritage site, this richly historic city is a superb mix of architecture, with fortifications that resemble the ones in Portugal's coasts. Most travelers are completely seduced by Galle's exotic ambiance, which makes it Sri Lanka's ideal cultural destination.

Inside the walled city, you will experience authentic old-world charm where magnificent buildings remain. The narrow streets are full of impressive Dutch colonial villas, and there's a refreshing absence of vehicular traffic. Walking by its rambling lanes, you'll stumble upon stylish cafes, hip boutiques, and perfectly restored hotels owned by local and foreigners alike. There are also several museums, antique shops, and restaurants that proudly display artifacts from the island's colonial era.
